Employee Commitment to Corporate Environmental Principles

Situation: A major Canadian company developed draft environmental principles by which the corporation and employees would be guided in their work with environmentally sensitive products, equipment, and land use.
Method: Over half a dozen focus groups were conducted prior to finalizing the principles and launching the communications and distribution of the principles. The groups were segmented by occupation and included clerical and administrative support, managers and professionals, technical, and senior management and executives.
Outcome: The company learned about current perceptions of the company, employees’ commitment to the environment, and their potential commitment to the proposed environmental principles. A communications and implementation plan was developed to encourage participation in putting the principles into practice.
