Emergency Planning Communications

Situation: The client was required by government to determine public awareness and recall of its emergency planning brochure and to evaluate the success of the booklet in communicating procedures to residents in a sensitive manner, without raising concerns and fears.
Method: Three telephone surveys were undertaken over 4 years among a random sample of community residents who live within 3 km and 10 km of the facility. Interviews were also conducted among community leaders to assess their opinions of the community – facility relationship and issues.
Outcome: The report tracked awareness of the booklet, and made recommendations on revisions to its format and content to increase public understanding of procedures in the event of an emergency situation.
